Taptapani Hot Springs
A natural hot sulphur spring at 500 m in the forested hills near Berhampur, channelled into a pond and bathing tanks, worshipped as a shrine to the goddess Kandhuni Devi.
History & legend
The spring has been a place of pilgrimage for the Saora and Kandha tribes for centuries; women pray to Kandhuni Devi here for children and toss offerings into the boiling pool. The Rajas of Ghumsur and later Paralakhemundi maintained the shrine, and the British recorded the spring's medicinal reputation in the 1880s Ganjam District Manual. The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation built the hilltop resort in the 1980s.
