Deomali Peak

500 km from Puri (11 hrs) · Koraput district Half day or overnight camp

The roof of Odisha in the Eastern Ghats near Koraput — rolling meadows, coffee plantations, cloud-draped valleys and tribal hamlets, perfect for camping and paragliding.

History & legend

Deomali sits in the Chandragiri–Pottangi subrange of the Eastern Ghats, an ancient landmass older than the Himalayas, formed over 1,500 million years ago. The hills are home to the Paraja, Gadaba and Kandha tribes whose megalithic burial stones and Dongria settlements dot the slopes. British surveyors mapped the peak in the 19th century; the area was a pocket of the Jeypore zamindari kingdom and later of Koraput district, carved out in 1936 when Odisha became a separate province.
