Talasari Beach
A serene red-crab beach where the Subarnarekha river meets the sea, with a bamboo-boat crossing, casuarina groves and the Chandaneswar Shiva temple nearby.
History & legend
'Talasari' means 'row of palms', and the beach was a landing point on the medieval coastal route between Kalinga and Bengal; the Subarnarekha ('gold-streaked') river was panned for gold from ancient times. The Chandaneswar temple, 8 km inland, has hosted the Pana Sankranti (Odia New Year) fair for over 500 years under the Bhanja and Mayurbhanj rulers. The Bengal border was fixed here when Odisha became a province in 1936.
