Narendra Tank (Chandan Pokhari)
A vast 15th-century sacred tank with a small island temple in the middle. Each summer the deities take boat rides here during the 21-day Chandan Yatra.
History & legend
Excavated in the 15th century by Narendra Deva, a prince of the Suryavamsi Gajapati dynasty under Kapilendra Deva, this 873 × 734 ft tank is one of the largest sacred water bodies in Odisha. The Chandan Yatra — 21 days of boat processions in which the deities' representative idols are rowed on decorated boats (Nanda and Bhadra) — has been held here since the reign of Gajapati Purushottama Deva. Sixteen small shrines line its banks and the island temple in the centre is reached by a stone bridge.
