Golden Beach (Blue Flag)

1.5 km from Jagannath Temple 1.5–2 hours

A clean, lifeguarded stretch of Puri beach with eco-friendly facilities, changing rooms, watersports and stunning sunrise views over the Bay of Bengal.

History & legend

Puri's shoreline has been a pilgrim's sea-bath (Mahodadhi) for centuries — dipping in the Bay of Bengal before darshan is part of the Jagannath pilgrimage described in medieval texts. Under British rule Puri grew into a seaside sanatorium town from the 1880s, and the Puri Beach Festival began here in 1994. In October 2020 this stretch became one of India's first eight beaches to receive the international Blue Flag eco-label from the Foundation for Environmental Education, Denmark, for cleanliness, safety and sustainable facilities.
