Hirakud Dam
A 25.8-km dam across the Mahanadi creating a 743 sq km reservoir — drive the dyke, climb Gandhi Minar for sunset and spot migratory birds and Debrigarh sanctuary wildlife.
History & legend
Conceived after the devastating 1937 Mahanadi floods and championed by Sir M. Visvesvaraya, Hirakud was the first major multipurpose river-valley project of independent India; Nehru laid the foundation in 1948 and inaugurated it on 13 January 1957. It submerged 249 villages and the historic town of Padmapur, displacing over 100,000 people — a sacrifice still remembered locally. The reservoir's Cattle Island is populated by descendants of livestock left behind when villages were evacuated.
