Chandipur Beach
A rare hide-and-seek beach where the tide recedes up to 5 km twice a day, letting you walk on the seabed among red crabs and horseshoe crabs.
History & legend
The unique tidal flat exists because of the extremely gentle slope of the seabed at the Budhabalanga river mouth. Chandipur was a British-era rest station and became famous in 1989 when DRDO opened its Integrated Test Range here — India's Agni and Prithvi missiles were first fired from the beach. The Balaramgadi estuary has been a fishing port since the Bhanja kings of Mayurbhanj and the Bhuyan chiefs traded here in the medieval era.
