Barehipani Falls

340 km from Puri (7.5 hrs) · Mayurbhanj district 1–2 hours (inside Simlipal)

A two-tiered waterfall on the Budhabalanga river deep inside Simlipal, plunging 399 m — India's second-highest — into a jungle-clad valley viewed from a forest platform.

History & legend

The Budhabalanga river rises on the Meghasani ('abode of clouds') peak and falls here in Santali and Ho tribal country; local legend says the fall is the goddess Budhi Thakurani's veil. The Bhanja maharajas of Mayurbhanj built the first forest rest houses and the 1930s road to reach it, and it became part of the Simlipal Tiger Reserve in 1973.
