Around Puri · Sunrise beach beside Konark
Chandrabhaga Beach
A pristine, less crowded Blue Flag beach 3 km from Konark, famous for the Magha Saptami sunrise fair where thousands take a holy dip.
History & legend
Chandrabhaga takes its name from a mythical river and from the legend of Samba, son of Krishna, who was cured of leprosy by worshipping Surya here for 12 years — the origin story of sun worship at Konark. The Magha Saptami mela, when pilgrims bathe at dawn and offer arghya to the rising sun, has drawn crowds for over a millennium and is mentioned in the Kapila Samhita. In 2018 it became the first beach in Asia to receive the Blue Flag certification.
